Las Vegas sports books were filled on Thursday with NFL gamblers who were happy to see their sport back in prime time. Several of these gamblers, however, were so wrapped up in Colby Caillat's rendition of the National Anthem, that they missed out on placing their bets on the actual game.

The NFL puts on a star-studded show to kick off every season, and this year was no exception. Dave Matthews was the pre-game attraction for fans, and Caillat was chosen to sing the national anthem. The rendition was stunning to many who watched, including the gamblers.

"I was going in to place my bets on the game, and I saw her(Caillat) singing the national anthem," said Mark Brumber. "Then, I was amazed with her performance, and by the time I realized I forgot to make my bets, it was too late, the game had started."

It is rare that a performance creates such attention. Whitney Houston sang what many believed was the best rendition ever of the national anthem at the Super Bowl, but most gamblers had already placed their bets for the big game. This was different, with some bettors waiting all the way up until the last minute to make their wagers.

Gamblers all across the world have been waiting all summer for the return of the NFL. Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings and defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints kicked off the year. The Saints won, but as is often the case with odds makers, they hit the odds square with a line of New Orleans -5.

Caillat is just one of dozens of performers that will have the honor of singing the national anthem before football games this year. The anthem is played before every sporting event, and the NFL often calls in celebrity performers to do the honors.

Motorists from nearby Interstate 280 and eyewitnesses described the towering flames reaching as high as 60 feet into the air more than an hour after the huge fireball ignited with a sudden explosion in the packed residential community, a few miles from San Francisco International Airport.

Yasmine Kury, who lives in an apartment complex near the fire's origin, saw black smoke drift over Highway 280 after a thunderous explosion rocked the Crestmoor community in the area of Skyline Boulevard and Sneath Lane about 6:15 p.m.

"We heard it and felt it, and everyone ran out of the building," Kury said. "It was just a huge explosion."
The noise was so deafening that residents at first thought a plane had crashed, but PG&E officials said one of its natural gas pipelines had erupted, fueling the flames that quickly began devouring homes and forcing a wide-scale evacuation. PG&E however, said the cause of the blaze had yet to be determined even as 200 firefighters from across the Bay Area rushed to help control the huge fire that had already damaged 120 homes.

The wife of gospel singer Marvin Sapp lost her fight with colon cancer

News outlets sadly report today that Gospel singer Marvin Sapp has lost his wife Malinda to colon cancer after 15 years of marriage, the Examiner said
Marvin Sapp is the founder and senior pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was also a member of the 1990’s gospel group Commissioned. He’s been a solo artist since the band’s dissolution in 1995, Yahoo Music said.

NEW YORK — Gospel singer Marvin Sapp is mourning the death of his wife and manager, MaLinda Sapp.
His record label, Verity Records, said she died Thursday after a fight with cancer. Details were not immediately available.

MaLinda Sapp was a professional counselor and administrative pastor at her husband's Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids, Mich. The church had posted a message on its website asking for prayers for MaLinda Sapp.

The couple had three children.

Marvin Sapp is one of gospel music's most popular stars. His 2008 song "Never Would Have Made It" set records for its duration on the charts, and he recently had a No. 1 hit on Billboard's gospel charts with the song "The Best in Me."

Tom Brady, New England Patriots' star quarter-back, was involved in a car accident at 6:34 a.m. on Thursday, September 9, 2010 in Boston, Massachusetts on the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Gloucester Street, according to reports.

Two ambulances arrived as well as the Boston Fire Department. The firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free an unconscious passenger from the other vehicle.

Brady's Audi sustained front-edge damage, but the other vehicle, a van, had a traffic light knocked over onto it. The one injured man in the van had blood all over his face and was freed through the roof. Two other passengers were uninjured.

Steve MacDonald, Boston Fire Department spokesman told Boston Herald, said Brady went left when a man in a Jeep Cherokee showed up to the crash site.

BOSTON — New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was unhurt in a two-vehicle accident near his home Thursday morning and hours later practiced as usual with his team just days before the season opener. He then agreed to a four-year extension that would make him the NFL's highest paid player, according to a person with knowledge of the contract.

The contract is worth an average of $19 million per year and begins in 2011, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the paperwork had not yet been filed with the NFL. Brady is making $6.5 million this season.

The crash, at an intersection in Boston's Back Bay area, knocked over a light pole and sent a passenger in the minivan that collided with Brady's car to a hospital with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening, a police report said.

A witness told The Associated Press that the two-time Super Bowl MVP was approaching the intersection on a green light when his black Audi sedan collided with the minivan.

The 21-year-old driver of the Mercury Villager minivan, Ludgero Rodrigues, was cited Thursday for failing to stop at a red light, based on witnesses statements, police said. Two other people in the minivan were able to exit and had no visible injuries, they said.

The police report, which did not name Brady, said the driver of the Audi had no visible injuries and was evaluated by Emergency Medical Services. It said a 49-year-old passenger had to be freed with the Jaws of Life and was taken to a hospital.

Rodrigues' driver's license had been suspended at least five times in three years, Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Ann Dufresne said. Last year, his license was suspended for 180 days after he was arrested for operating under the influence and refused to take a blood-alcohol test, Dufresne said.
RMV records also show that Rodrigues had been charged with a number of moving and traffic violations.

Bill Barron said he was in his apartment overlooking the intersection when he heard a collision that sounded like "a bolt of lightning."

When he looked out the window, he saw the driver of the car picking glass off his clothes and wiping himself off with a towel. He didn't realize until later that it was Brady.

"I thought it was some college kid who had crashed up his father's really nice car," Barron said.
Brady then retrieved some items from his car, made a series of phone calls and was picked up by another vehicle, Barron said.
